The State of the World

It is the policy of The 80-Something Blog not to write about politics.  I leave that to Heather Cox Richardson or whomever you read for political analysis.

However, like so many of us, I am more than worried about the state of the world today.  About the amount of hatred.  About our warming planet.  About the lack of respect for institutions of all sorts.  And the lack of respect for those who disagree with us.

I wish I had the answer.  I wish the inhabitants of the world would live by the Golden Rule.

I feel we are waiting for the other shoe to drop.

It’s a bad feeling.

    I have the same feelings of despair but the only thing I can do about all the killings and hatred in our world is to pray for peace and more love in our world. I never talk about my religion but I think the time is way past now to ask everyone to pray to their God for peace and love to surround our world. Please,please, please pray to the God of your heart and soul for peace

    Good morning – I am so sorry you are feeling like you are waiting for the other shoe to drop. I have a good friend who works for a religious institution who feels the same way. While not trying to stick my head in the sand or close my eyes and wish it all away, I am trying to take things one day at a time. It’s difficult for me as I am usually a person who can’t abide by people hurting one another. Cambodia’s terrible fighting had me in tears at three. I cried and screamed, “Why mommy? Why?” I am struggling not to feel this way because my 83 year old mother needs me to be strong for her now. She feels like the world is in dire straits too. I need to support her like she supported me. Thanks for writing this blog and voicing what many are feeling.

    The best way I try to cope with all that is going on in the world today is to say thanks at the end of the day that I made it through yet another day. When I wake the following morning, I also say to myself, thank you for one more day.
    Seeing that I will turn 83 later this month, I too feel as many individuals do asking the question, how did this come about? But then considering myself a realist, I also say to myself, no sense in worrying about it or dwelling on it. That will just make me sick or worse than whatever condition I am in at the moment.
    “One day at a time, one day at a time!”

    Although it has been decades since I read the book “A Winkle in Time” the story of a dark shadow that increases as the Evil Force triumphs has stayed with me. I will advocate and support individuals and causes that act with kindness and empathy. As a mother and grandmother, political activism is my way to cope.

    Recently I watched a History series called Mankind, the Story of All of Us, and was horrified to discover that what is going on now has happened repeatedly over and over again in civilizations all over the world and all over time. One man or group of men is seized by a power lust, and the minions fall into line to die for the cause. The difference is in the seriousness of the weapons available for killing. We are at a dangerous time when our weapons can take down millions instead of one, two, or a few. What can we do to make this time different?
